I love the idea of crocheting a blanket. It's a great keepsake. I strongly suggest you join Ravelry! It's a fantastic site that not only has a mive database of patterns but has great forums too if you ever get stuck. I did a quick search and found over 1000 free crochet blanket patterns! I hope you can fins something that suits you. I'm pretty useless at crochet but I'm a knitter and Ravelry is an amazing tool.
