Spell-check not working in PowerPoint 2007?

When I hit F7 in PowerPoint, it says 'spelling check is complete' even when there is a phrase like "Zal;ga$ansdlc oiar0f" on the slide. Proofing options in PowerPoint are set to auto correct or underline etc, so that is not the problem. What else?
