Why did German moderates support Adolf Hitler before he became the ruler of Germany?

Many Moderates feared the Communists more than the NSDAP(Nazis). Plus Hitler made his aims seem reasonable. They were seen as the only popular party that could stand against the KPD(German Communist Party)
