Possible, but 1 in 3000 chance is very slim, most asteroids burn up upon entering earths atmosphere, thus the size of the main fragment maybe a lot less than predicted, however to say it will wipe out life in a range of 6000sq km is a big statement, that's 3000 times the size of the predicted impact Crater. Anyway most asteroids end up in the sea, or just do little damage to cars/ houses.
